AC Milan's U-21 squad to arrive in Portland this weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. - The future stars of Italian club and 2007 Champions League champion, AC Milan are scheduled to arrive in Portland over the weekend as AC Milan Primavera (U-21) prepares to battle the Portland Timbers on June 19 at PGE Park at 7 p.m.

"AC Milan has a great history and is one of the most respected clubs in the world," said Gavin Wilkinson, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. "The Primavera team is good enough to play anyone in the world, and we are excited have them in town. This will be another great test for our players and a great opportunity for our fans to see some of the top young talent in the world."

Highlighting AC Milan's U-21 roster are Italian Youth National Team member Matteo Darmian, who recently played in the European U-19 Championships, midfielder Davide Ancelotti, the son of AC Milan head coach Carlo Ancelotti, and defender Luca Antonelli, who was called up 12 times by AC Milan during the 2006-07 season.

Bakersfield Brigade Bow Out Of Open Cup

The result was one expected when a team of amateurs takes on a group of professionals. When the PDL’s Bakersfield Brigade played the USL First Division’s Portland Timbers, it took all of four minutes for the visitors to take a lead.

But the Brigade continued playing valiantly, and the boys from Bakersfield showed well in a 2-0 loss to the more experienced team in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open on Tuesday at Bakersfield Christian High.

"I think the first 20 minutes we came out a little nervous," Brigade coach Francisco Gomez said. "After that, we saw we could play with those guys."

Four minutes into the first half, Portland’s Lee Morrison headed an assist to Lawrence Olum to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead. It appeared the route was on.

Keep in mind, the Brigade plays two divisions behind the league Portland plays in. The Timbers are only one rung below the MLS.

But Bakersfield had the homefield advantage, and the Timbers were dealing with, what is for them, unusually warm weather. In addition, Portland had just returned from a road trip on the East Coast before traveling directly to Bakersfield.

"I thought we were flat," said Portland head coach Gavin Wilkinson. "We got casual. This was (Bakersfield’s) final, and our boys played at Montreal and Rochester the last few days."

Portland made the score 2-0 in the 18th minute when Luc Harrington headed in an assist from Ricardo Lara. It would be the end of the Timbers’ scoring, but it was all they needed.

By the time the second half rolled around, Bakersfield seemed a little more comfortable sharing the field with Portland. The Brigade couldn’t convert on scoring opportunities, though.

"We just weren’t making the right runs," Brigade midfielder Shawn Singh said. "We created opportunities, but we couldn’t finish."

Singh was named Player of the Game for his efforts, and his presence on the field was a reminder of the chasm separating these two teams.

While the Timbers are dreaming of a life in the MLS and picking up a paycheck to do so, Singh will try to walk on at UCLA next season after his high school career at Garces finished three months ago.

"I’m proud of Shawn," Gomez said. "He’s been working hard all year. He’s shown that he belongs here."

Naturally, the Timbers have more resources as far as practice time and player commitment as well. Wilkinson and his Portland team left town with a respect for what the Bakersfield players have accomplished in limited time together.

"I think there are some good individuals," Wilkinson said. "In the PDL it’s hard to work with the guys because they’re coming and going, but they had some good individual players."

The U.S. Open continues for Portland, while the Brigade will try to carry some momentum into the rest of its PDL season.

"I’m definitely not disappointed with the loss," Gomez said. "I’ll take this because the team played well.

"Now we’ll just focus on league and trying to make a run for the playoffs."

Portland gets early goals from Olum, Harrington; steady in 2-0 win at Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Early goals from Lawrence Olum and Luc Harrington gave Portland a comfortable lead, and the Timbers earned a 2-0 victory over the Bakersfield Brigade of the Premier Development League in first-round play of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night in Bakersfield.

The Timbers benefited from a pair of goals in the first 18 minutes of play and held strong the rest of the way to get the victory, despite playing their third road match in five days after recent league games at Montreal and Rochester.

"In the end, it was a solid performance," said Gavin Wilkinson, head coach of the Timbers. "Looking at everything, I thought our team did really well. We scored the two goals early and were able to take it a bit easy after that."

Portland now faces Seattle, a 4-1 winner over the Banat Arsenal Tuesday night, in the second round of the U.S Open Cup on June 26.

Portland wasted little time in netting the match’s first goal when Olum found the back of the net with a header, cashing in on a corner kick from Luke Kreamalmeyer in the fourth minute of play.

The Timbers quickly doubled their lead when, in the 18th minute, midfielder Kiki Lara got free down the left side and pinpointed a cross to Harrington, whose scoring header made it 2-0.

Goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin made a key save in the 86th minute to preserve the shutout and help the Timbers advance to the second round of the in-season tournament.

Next up for the Timbers is a home friendly against AC Milan Primavera at PGE Park on June 19; kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Portland to play final game of three-game road swing

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers continue their stretch of road games as they face the Bakersfield Brigade of the Premier Development League (PDL) in the opening round of the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night in Bakersfield, Calif. The two sides square off at Bakersfield Christian High School; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. A broadcast of the match will not be available.

The winner between the Timbers and Brigade will face the winner of the Banat Arsenal (USASA) and Seattle Sounders (USL-1) match in the second round on June 26.

The Timbers are 2-3-0 in U.S. Open Cup play since 2001 and have reached as high as the fourth round in 2004 and 2005. Last season, the Timbers were eliminated by the Charleston Battery (USL-1) in the third round.

The Timbers are coming off a three-point, two-game road trip through Montreal and Rochester over the weekend with a 1-0 win over the Montreal Impact on June 8. With a record of 4-2-2 (14pts), the Timbers are in a three-way tie for fifth in the USL First Division. Including Tuesday's match, the Timbers have played three games in five days in three different cities.

The Timbers will have to play without the team's leading scorer, midfielder Andrew Gregor, who left for a six-day training camp in Spain with the U.S. Futsal National Team on Sunday.

Bakersfield (5-4-0, 15pts) is currently ranked second in the Southwest Division of the PDL's Western Conference. Led by forward Santiago Aguilera-Navarro, the Brigade are 2-1-0 in their last three matches with wins over the San Jose Frogs and San Francisco Seals last weekend. Navarro has scored two goals in the last two games to lead the team in goals scored (5) and points (11).

The Brigade was the first PDL team to qualify for the 2007 U.S. Open Cup, winning the first three of its four qualifying matches over the Fresno Fuego (April 28), Orange County Blue Star (May 5) and Lancaster Rattlers (May 18). This is Bakersfield's first U.S. Open Cup appearance.

ROCHESTER ENDS TIMBERS STREAK WITH 2-1 WIN

Timbers handed first loss since May 5

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Former Timber Aaron Lines scored his first goal of the season and tallied an assist as the Rochester Raging Rhinos defeated the Portland Timbers 2-1 at PAETEC Park Saturday night. The loss ended the Timbers' record-setting string of four consecutive shutouts.

Rochester (5-3-5, 20pts) scored its first goal of the match in the fourth minute and was the first goal allowed by Josh Wicks and the Timbers' defense in five games - a span of 377 minutes. Prior to the match, the last goal allowed by the Timbers (4-2-2, 14pts) was in the 77th minute against the Seattle Sounders on May 11 at PGE Park.

Lines helped Rochester score two goals in the first 28 minutes of the match, including his first goal of the year in the 4th minute.

Timbers defender Leonard Griffin scored his second goal of the season in the first half to trim Rochester's lead 2-1. It was his second goal of the season against Rochester and goalkeeper Chase Harrison. Griffin scored his first professional goal against Harrison in a 2-0 win over Rochester at PGE Park on May 13.

Rochester took a 1-0 lead early in the match with a 15 yard shot by Lines. Timbers midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer, under pressure, attempted to clear the ball from the penalty area, but his effort went directly to Lines who finished the half volley inside the back post.

In the 28th minute, Lines found forward Matthew Delicate who had snuck behind the Timbers backline. Delicate made one quick move around Wicks, who was charging off his line, and finished into an open net for a 2-0 Rochester lead.

Timbers forward Chris Bagley nearly found his first goal of the season in the 37th minute with a header from Griffin. Bagley's shot on the back post hit Harrison in the chest for one of his four saves in the match.

Griffin put the Timbers on the board 41st minute with a 22 yard shot into the upper corner on the near post. Charging up field, Griffin's right-footed shot on the run froze Harrison and cut Rochester's lead 2-1.

The Timbers took 11 shots in the match including five in the second half, but the Raging Rhino defense prevented Portland from capitalizing on dangerous changes throughout the game.

Midfielders Tom Poltl and Andrew Gregor were both booked in the second half - the only cards issued in the match. Gregor received a caution in the 53rd minute while Poltl received his in the 85th.The Timbers return home Sunday but leave again on Monday for the first round of the U.S. Open Cup in Bakersfield, Calif., against the Bakersfield Brigade of the Premier Development League (PDL) on June 12. Held at Bakersfield Christian High School, kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Timbers hand Impact first loss of 2007 season

MONTREAL, Que. - Forward Bryan Jordan drew a foul in the box to set up the game-winning goal, a penalty kick in the 75th minute, by midfielder Andrew Gregor as the Portland Timbers defeated the Montreal Impact 1-0 at Claude Robillard Sports Complex in Montreal.

Goalkeeper Josh Wicks and the Timbers (4-1-2, 14pts) defense logged their fourth consecutive shutout of the season and set a new modern franchise record having played 378 minutes without allowing a goal. The previous record was 362 minutes of shut-out play set in 2004 by former Timber Josh Saunders.

Gregor scored his fifth goal of the season in the 75th minute on a penalty kick after Jordan was fouled in the box. Calmly approaching the ball, Gregor slotted his shot past Montreal goalkeeper Matt Jordan to hand the Impact (4-1-4, 16pts) their first loss of the season.

With the win, the Timbers moved into a two-way tie for fifth in the USL First Division with the Carolina RailHawks (3-2-5, 14pts) and picked up their first road victory of the season.

Wicks recorded seven saves on the night including a diving save in the 7th minute on a shot by Impact forward Fred Moojen. Montreal midfielder Leonardo Di Lorenzo had four shots on the night.

Montreal out shot the Timbers 15-4 and it was the second half before the Timbers recorded their first shot of the night. Montreal took eight shots in the second half, a majority of those coming late in the match after the Timbers had taken the lead.

The Impact were without the services of starting defender Gabriel Gervais and midfielder Antonio Ribiero who are currently competing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the Canadian National Team.

Roster includes three players with first-team appearances in 2006-07

PORTLAND, Ore. - Champions League champion AC Milan announced today the travel roster for its Primavera team (U-21), which is scheduled to play the Portland Timbers on June 19 in the Esurance AC Milan U-21 vs. Timbers Exhibition Match presented by Peroni Italy & KINK.fm at PGE Park at 7 p.m.

Featured on AC Milan Primavera's roster are three players who played with AC Milan's first team during the 2006-07 season - defender Matteo Darmian, and midfielders Alex Guerci and Luca Antonelli.

Antonelli, 20, was called up to the first team 12 times during the season, more than any other Primavera player. He made appearances in two Italian Cup victories over Brescia and a Serie A match against Udinese on Dec. 23.

AC Milan Primavera's roster also includes midfielder Davide Ancelotti - the son of AC Milan head coach Carlo Ancelotti, a former Italian International and 1990 World Cup participant. Davide Ancelotti, 17, played for AC Milan's U-18 squad during the 2006-07 season.

GREGOR TO JOIN U.S. FUTSAL TEAM IN SPAIN

Timbers midfielder to train June 10-16 in prep of 2007 Pan-Am Games

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Timbers midfielder Andrew Gregor will join the U.S. National Futsal team in Spain from June 10-16 to train for the upcoming 2007 Pan-American Games, it was announced today. Gregor was invited to join the U.S. Futsal player pool for the Pan-American Games on May 3.

Gregor, the Timbers' team captain, will leave for Spain immediately following the Portland's match in Rochester on June 9 and will return in time for the team's exhibition match against AC Milan Primavera (U-21) on June 19 at PGE Park.

The U.S. National Futsal team, led by head coach Keith Tozer, will train in Cordoba and Jaen, Spain with two practice matches scheduled against the Spanish Futsal team on June 13 in Cordoba, and June 15 in Jaen.

Gregor is one of two players from the USL First Division traveling to Spain with the U.S. team for this round of training; the other is Rochester Raging Rhino midfielder John Ball.

Through the Timbers' first six USL First Division matches, Gregor has scored four goals, tallied an assist and leads the team in points (9) and is tied for the team lead in games (6) and minutes (540) played. Gregor was selected as the USL First Division Player of the Week in Week 4.

Gregor and the Timbers leave today for their trip east as they face the Montreal Impact and Rochester Raging Rhinos in back-to-back matches on June 8 and June 9. Futsal is a slightly smaller, indoor-version of outdoor soccer and is constrained by lines like the outdoor game. In Futsal, only five players per team are allowed on the field at any given time, one of whom is the goalkeeper.

The Timbers (3-1-2, 11pts) have had an 11-day break between league matches; their last match was a 0-0 draw against the Carolina RailHawks on May 27 at PGE Park. Having played five of their first six matches at home, the Timbers face just their second and third matches on the road this season.

The Timbers return home from their East Coast trip and then head to Bakersfield, Calif., to face the Bakersfield Brigade of the Premier Development League (PDL) in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup on June 12. The next home match for the Timbers is June 19 against AC Milan's U-21 squad (Primavera) in an international exhibition match at PGE Park.

ABOUT MONTREAL IMPACT
The Impact wrap up a stretch of three games in seven days when they host the Timbers on June 8 at 5 p.m. (Pacific). By Friday, the Impact will have played the Vancouver Whitecaps, Minnesota Thunder and Timbers this week.

Currently ranked second in the USL First Division, the Impact are the last undefeated team in the league and are 2-0-2 at home this season. Montreal has outscored opponents 4-1 at home, conceding its first goal of the season in the final minute against Minnesota on Tuesday.

The Timbers are 1-0-1 in Montreal, but the all-time series between the two clubs is tied at 2-2-1. This is the first meeting between the two sides this season. The Impact travel west to face the Timbers in Portland on June 21.

ABOUT ROCHESTER RAGING RHINOS
The Raging Rhinos and the Timbers wrap up their season series in Rochester on Saturday, June 9 at 4:35 p.m. (Pacific). Rochester will play its second game in two days when it hosts the Timbers, returning home from a match at Carolina Friday night.

The Raging Rhinos are 2-0-1 in their last three matches, putting them in a two-way tie for second place with Montreal in the USL First Division. In their last three games, Rochester has recorded two shutouts, one from each goalkeeper, Chase Harrison and Hector Zapata.

The match against the Timbers marks just Rochester's third game at home this season. The Timbers are 1-5-1 all-time against the Raging Rhinos and are 0-2-1 all-time at Rochester.

The Timbers recorded their first win over Rochester in modern-franchise history in their previous meeting on May 13 with a 2-0 result at PGE Park.

Jordan selected by fans in first "Man of the Month" poll in 2007

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Timbers forward Bryan Jordan was selected by fans as May's "Man of the Month" recording two goals, an assist and was selected to the USL First Division Team of the Week twice in the first full month of the season. He is the first fan-voted "Man of the Month" recipient in 2007.

Among the players who made an impact on the pitch for the Timbers during the month of May, Jordan, 21, was selected by fans in a poll on the Timbers' website www.portlandtimbers.com.

A rookie from Oregon State University, Jordan has worked his way into a starting role since the beginning of the season. In his last three USL First Division matches, all starts, Jordan has scored two goals and recorded an assist and is currently second on the team in goals and points (5). Jordan has appeared in each of the Timbers six matches this season.

Jordan scored his first professional goal May 9 in an international exhibition match against Mexican side Club Necaxa Elite at PGE Park. His strike in the 46th minute gave the Timbers a 1-0 win in their first international exhibition match of the season.

Timbers defeat OUSA U-23s 2-1 in Eugene Saturday

The Portland Timbers defeated the Oregon United Soccer Academy U-23 squad 2-1 in Eugene, Ore., at Sheldon High School Saturday night. Forward Jaime Ambriz tallied a goal in the first half while midfielder Kiki Lara scored on a penalty kick late in the second. The Timbers were ahead 2-0 when the OUSA squad scored late in the match to make the final score 2-1.

Assisted by new midfielder Tom Taylor, Ambriz scored in the first half to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Late in the match, sub David Hague was fouled in the box by the OUSA goalkeeper to set up the late PK. Lara delivered to give the Timbers a 2-0 lead.

OUSA scored in the closing minutes to spoil Timber goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin's clean sheet.

The Timbers starting line up featured trialist, midfielder Miguel Duante. Duante played collegiately at the University of Portland.
