HAGUE HAT TRICK HELPS TIMBERS TO 4-1 WIN OVER CALIFORNIA
Portland moves into first place in USL First Division
PORTLAND, Ore. - Forward David Hague recorded the first hat trick of the season as the Timbers defeated the California Victory 4-1 at PGE Park on Sunday. With their fifth win in a row, the Timbers set a new franchise record having played 388 minutes without allowing a goal and move into first place in the USL First Division. Hague's hat trick is the first by any player in the 2007 USL First Division season.
The Timbers (9-2-3, 30pts) swept the five-game season series against the Victory and continue their unbeaten record at home with a 6-0-3 record at PGE Park this season. The Timbers defense contributed on the offensive side of the field as defender Cameron Knowles tallied a goal and an assist and goalkeeper Josh Wicks picked up his second assist of the year on a long punt to Hague.
In the win, the Victory (2-10-5, 11pts) ended Portland's streak of four consecutive shutouts scoring their first goal in five matches against the Timbers. Despite the goal, the Timbers set a new franchise record in consecutive minutes played without allowing a goal at 388 - a streak that spanned over six matches starting June 21. The Timbers also picked up their fifth straight victory and are now just one win shy of matching the franchise record for consecutive wins set in 2004 when Portland won the USL First Division Regular-Season Championship.
Hague, who entered the match as a sub in the 67th minute, scored all three goals in a 20 minute span with a one man advantage as California's Ricardo Sanchez was ejected in the 54th minute. In the 68th minute, Hague found space in the box after receiving the ball from Andrew Gregor. After a quick cut back, Hague blasted a 10-yard shot into the back of the net past Victory goalkeeper Eric Reed.
Eight minutes later, Hague got under a long ball over the top by Wicks. Off the bounce Hague buried a 13-yard shot for his second goal of the game in the 74th minute, giving Wicks his second assist of the year and marks the second time this season Hague has finished a punt by Wicks.
In the 88th minute, Hague capped the night's scoring with a chip shot over Reed. Knowles cleared a ball from the Timbers defensive third as Hague chased down the ball. Getting into position, Hague finished his third goal of the night off the bounce inside the far post. Hague's hat trick is the first Timbers' hat trick since September 8, 2005 when Dan Antoniuk scored three in a 6-1 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks. Hague's hat trick is also the first by any player in the 2007 USL First Division season.
Down 1-0, Knowles headed in his second goal of the season to help the Timbers pull even in the 32nd minute. A foul on midfielder Tom Poltl set up a free kick by Andrew Gregor from 40 yards out. California took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on Federico Bianchi's first goal of the season. Bianchi weaved his way into the box and had his pass deflected by a Timbers defender and went right back into the path of Bianchi who then drilled a shot inside the far post.
The Timbers host the defending USL First Division Champion Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday at PGE Park as Portland continues its stretch of five games in 10 days. Thursday's match is set for 7 p.m. and will be televised live on Fox Sports Northwest.
Notes: Poltl made his first start since June 28 when he injured his hip ... When California scored in the 17th minute it marked the first time the Timbers had trailed in a league match since June 9 at Rochester ... Lillywhite's star striker sold to EPL's Portsmouth
PORTLAND, Ore. - England's Preston North End will bring its internationally talented squad to the United States when they play the Portland Timbers while on its preseason tour on July 28 at PGE Park. The Lillywhites must find a way to fill the scoring void after star English U-21 striker, David Nugent, was sold last week to Portsmouth FC of the English Premier League.
Nugent, who for weeks had expressed interest in playing for an English Premier League (EPL) club, was finally granted his wish as Preston North End and Portsmouth came to an agreement of 6 million pounds for Nugent's rights. Nugent was Preston's leading scorer last season with 15 goals.
In Nugent's absence, the Lillywhites will count on their several other international players as they battle for promotion into the EPL during the 2007-08 season. Preston's roster includes three players who are currently representing their home country in the 2008 European Championship qualification round.
Goalkeeper Wayne Henderson and 22-year old defender Sean St. Ledger are both members of the Republic of Ireland National Team and have helped their country to a 4-2-1 record in group play of the 2008 European Championship qualification round. Henderson, who started his pro career with EPL club Aston Villa at 17, has been featured in two matches and has allowed two goals.
Preston defender Graham Alexander is the captain of the Scottish National Team and has led his country to a 5-2-0 record in the European Championship qualification round. Alexander, who has made over 300 appearances with Preston North End, also competed in World Cup qualification matches for Scotland in 2006.
The Lillywhites also have several former international players on their squad including goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, who was a member of England's U-21 National Team, and defender Patrick Agyemang, who earned three caps with Ghana in qualification matches but was not selected to the 23-man squad for the 2006 World Cup.

Portland defense matches franchise record with fourth consecutive shutout
PORTLAND, Ore. - Rookie forward Bryan Jordan scored his fourth goal of the season as the Portland Timbers defeated the California Victory 1-0 in front of 6,332 at PGE Park on Friday night. In the win, Portland recorded its fourth consecutive shutout matching a franchise record set earlier in the season.
Now with eight shutouts on the year, the Timbers have not allowed a goal since a 1-1 draw against the Montreal Impact on June 21 at PGE Park - a span of 364 minutes. With the shutout victory over California (2-9-5, 11pts), the Timbers matched the franchise record of four consecutive shouts set previously in the year. The previous run of four straight shutouts also set a new franchise record of consecutive minutes played without allowing a goal - 377 minutes.
Portland is now 4-0-0 against the Victory this season and also maintains its unbeaten streak at PGE Park. In eight league matches at home, the Timbers are 5-0-3. The win also propels the Timbers into a tie for second place in the USL First Division with a record of 8-2-3 (27pts).
Jordan scored the lone goal in the 53rd minute on a well-placed pass from defender Scot Thompson. Moving the ball up the right side of the field, Thompson found Jordan racing through the box. Meeting up with the ball about 12 yards out, Jordan buried the ball inside the far post.
The Timbers had two chances to take the lead in the 27th minute but Victory goalkeeper Eric Reed made two stops to keep the score tied at 0-0 through the first half. Reed denied a shot by Portland forward Chris Bagley from the top of the box and knocked the ball towards Jordan. With another diving save in the opposite direction Reed cleared Jordan's shot out of the box.
The Timbers and Victory wrap up their season series on Sunday at PGE Park. Sunday's match is Portland's annual Teddy Bear Toss to benefit Doernbecher Children's Hospital. The Timbers encourage fans to donate teddy bears and stuffed animals by tossing them onto the field after the team scored its first goal of the match on Sunday.

Long-time icon and fan honored as Portland takes on California
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers will pay tribute to their long-time team icon, Timber Jim, July 13 at PGE Park as the Timbers take on the California Victory. The first 2,000 fans receive a Timber Jim Bobblehead presented by Toyota.
Jim Serrill, (aka "Timber Jim") first joined the Timbers in the late 1970s during the days of the North American Soccer League (NASL). As a fan, Serrill first inquired about bringing a chainsaw to Timbers matches to help energize the crowd. Reluctant to have a chainsaw in the stands, former Timbers general manager Keith Williams invited Serrill to sit near the field and cut off a chunk of a log after each Timbers goal. His on-field role quickly expanded to revving up the crowd and he inherited the name of "Timber Jim".
When the Timbers were re-born in 2001, Serrill didn't hesitate to continue his role as Timber Jim. For the past seven seasons, fans have enjoyed the energy brought to PGE Park through Serrill's trademark back flips and high-wire stunts, such as rappelling from the rafters while banging on his drum.

Wicks sets new franchise record with seventh shutout of the season
San Francisco, Calif. - Midfielder Andrew Gregor tallied a goal and an assist in the match's opening 30 minutes to help the Portland Timbers defeat the California Victory 3-0 at Kezar Stadium on Saturday night. Portland's defense continues its shutout play with its third consecutive shutout and seventh on the season.
Timbers goalkeeper Josh Wicks recorded his seventh shutout of the season to set a new modern franchise record for shutouts in a single season. The Timbers (7-2-3, 24pts) have not conceded a goal since the 86th minute against Montreal on June 21 - a span of 274 minutes.
Portland's defense also provided some offensive firepower as defenders Cameron Knowles and Justin Thompson provided a goal and an assist.
The Timbers are now 3-0-0 against the 2007 expansion side Victory (2-8-5, 11pts).
Forward Bryan Jordan set up Gregor's penalty kick goal in the 11th minute as he was taken down in the box. Gregor, who leads the Timbers in scoring, netted his sixth goal of the season inside the left post past Victory goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek.
In the17th minute, Jordan scored his third goal of the season giving the Timbers a 2-0 advantage. Gregor started the play with a 26-yard free kick along the right post. Thompson headed Gregor's ball into the box to Jordan who then finished from six yards out.
Knowles capped the night's scoring, heading in his first career goal in the 20th minute. Gregor sent a 40-yard free kick into the box that found Knowles on the near post.
Saturday's match marked the second time this season the Timbers have scored three or more goals in a match. The last time was a 3-1 win on April 21 against the Puerto Rico Islanders in the 2007 season opener at PGE Park.
The Timbers return home to face the Victory on July 13 and July 15 at PGE Park to wrap up the season series between the two clubs. The first 1,500 fans on July 13 will receive a Timber Jim bobblehead on Timber Jim Bobblehead Night presented by Toyota; the match will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel.
