BAKERSFIELD, CA,
May 29, 2007

The Bakersfield Brigade Men’s PDL team received notice today from the U.S. Soccer Federation that they will host the Portland Timbers in the first round of tournament play on Tuesday June 12 at 7:30pm at Bakersfield Christian High School.

“Bringing the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup to Bakersfield is history in the making and we’re all very excited to be part of it,” stated Brigade Vice President and General Manager Joe Jimenez.

The Brigade qualified for the US Open Cup earlier this month and in fact were the first, out of all 63 PDL teams competing for a spot, to be given a birth into the tournament. In addition, the Brigade used only three of their four qualifying games to secure that birth, defeating the Fresno Fuego on April 28th (0-3), the OC Blue Star on May 5 (0-1) and the Lancaster Rattlers on May 18 (5-1).

“This is a great opportunity to showcase the talent of our team against the talent of a USL Division 1 team (Portland Timbers) at home and in front of our fans,” stated Brigade Head Coach Francisco Gomez.

The winner of the match will move on to the 2nd Round of the tournament and will face either the Banat Arsenal of the USASA or the Seattle Sounders of the USL’s First Division. The winner of the 2nd round will face a team from the MLS.

Timbers remain unbeaten at home

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers battled expansion side, the Carolina Railhawks, to a 0-0 draw in front of 5,026 at PGE Park Sunday night. The Timbers were held scoreless for just the second time this season despite an extra man as a Carolina player was sent off in the first half. Led by goalkeeper Josh Wicks, the Timbers defense continued its streak of shut out play.

Wicks recorded his third consecutive shut out of the season as the Timbers (3-1-2, 11pts) have not allowed a goal in 282 minutes. With the draw against Carolina (3-2-4, 13pts), the Timbers maintain an unblemished record of 3-0-2 at home.

The Timbers couldn't capitalize on a one-man advantage during the final 51 minutes of play. Carolina midfielder Jonny Steele was ejected from the match in the 39th minute after being issued his second caution of the night with a hard tackle on defender Scot Thompson.

Both teams had scoring opportunities through the first half. In the 22nd minute, Carolina forward Chris Carrieri chipped a shot wide of the far post from the top left corner of the six-yard box.

In the 28th minute, midfielder Andrew Gregor nearly scored his fifth goal of the season with a 19-yard free kick from the top right corner of the box. His shot bent around Carolina's four-man wall towards the top near corner of the goal but Railhawks goalkeeper Chris McClellan snagged the ball before it could sneak in.

The Timbers out shot Carolina 6-2 in the second half but couldn't find the back of the net. The Timbers had 11 total shots in the match.

With an 11-day layoff until their next regular-season match, the Timbers face Montreal and Rochester on the road in back-to-back matches June 8 and 9. PTFC Win 2-0 Over The California Victory

Official Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TIMBERS SHUTOUT CALIFORNIA 2-0 AT PGE PARK
Jordan scores a goal and assists another in Timbers victory

PORTLAND, Ore. - Forward Bryan Jordan netted his second goal of the season and tallied an assist to help the Portland Timbers defeat the California Victory 2-0 at PGE Park Friday night in front of 4,795. With the match's attendance, the Timbers creep to within a few hundred fans to eclipse the 500,000 regular-season attendance mark.

The Timbers (3-1-1, 10pts) defense held the Victory (0-3-1, 1pt) to only three shots in the match helping goalkeeper Josh Wicks record his second shut out victory of the season. The Timbers have played 192 consecutive minutes of shut out soccer, the last goal allowed was in the 78th minute in the match against Seattle at PGE Park on May 11.

Defender Scot Thompson contributed to the victory scoring his first goal of the season in the 9th minute -also his first goal since June of 2006.

With the win the Timbers are now 3-0-1 at home and have outscored opponents 9-3 at PGE Park.

With Friday's attendance of 4,795, the Timbers are within a few hundred fans to break the 500,000 regular-season attendance mark. Since 2001, and including the 2007 season the Timbers have had 499,263 fans visit PGE Park for Timbers matches.

The Timbers jumped on the board in the 9th minute courtesy of Thompson. The play developed on a free kick by midfielder Andrew Gregor at the top right corner of the penalty area. His ball into the box connected with defender Cameron Knowles, but Knowles' shot was deflected by California goalkeeper Eric Reed out to Jordan on the wing. Jordan slotted the ball to Thompson, four yards out from goal, who re-directed the ball inside the far post for an early Timbers' lead.

In the 54th minute Jordan gave the Timbers a 2-0 lead over the Victory cleaning up a loose ball in front of the net. Gregor, on the right touch line about 30 yards from goal, sent a cross to forward Chris Bagley on the far post. Bagley's header was stopped by Reed, who appeared to take control of the ball. But Jordan found the loose ball and finished it for his second goal of the season and second in three matches.

The Timbers play their second match in three days on Sunday at PGE Park when they face the Carolina Railhawks at 6 p.m.

Official PTFC Press Release About New Owners

Official Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PORTLAND BEAVERS, PORTLAND TIMBERS ANNOUNCE NEW OWNERSHIP

New owner aims to make PGE Park the preeminent destination for family entertainment

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Beavers, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and the Portland Timbers professional soccer team, announced today that an agreement has been signed to sell the team to Shortstop, LLC.

The new ownership will consist primarily of Merritt Paulson, Manager of Shortstop, LLC and most recently Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development at NBA Entertainment in New York. As part of the purchase Merritt, 34, and his wife, Heather, are in the process of moving to Portland and becoming part of the local community.

Paulson will assume the role of President and general manager for the Portland Beavers, and President of the Portland Timbers, currently open positions.

The long-term goals of the new ownership will be to optimize and continue to improve the fan experience at all PGE Park events. Paulson also is fiercely dedicated to better integrating the two franchises together into the Portland community and will be focusing on community outreach. "These teams can be a catalyst to help people of all ages by getting them involved, in helping to shine a light on areas of the community that need attention, and by generating the resources needed to make this community a better place for everyone. We have several significant announcements along these lines in the near future, so stay tuned," Paulson added.

"I’m looking forward to building on the rich baseball and soccer tradition in Portland with a focus on community involvement," Paulson said. "My aim is to make PGE Park the preeminent destination for family entertainment."

Paulson believes the Portland community and the teams are at a crucial crossroads in their relationship. "Portland is a fabulous baseball market, and I see enormous soccer growth potential here as well. There is tremendous positive momentum with the Beavers and Timbers, and I believe we can build on that to create the ultimate family sports entainment experience befitting a city of Portland’s caliber."

Paulson’s professional career has been focused on consumer entertainment and sports, which will provide a strong foundation for ownership in both minor league teams. After completing his MBA at Harvard, Paulson was part of a joint venture in Palo Alto, Calif., that focused on building high-speed wireless networks. He then moved to New York to become the manager of HBO on Demand and was part of the team that launced the premium subscription video on-demand service. After HBO, Paulson moved to NBA Entertainment and has been serving as the Senior Director of Marketing and business Development at NBA Entertainment for the last four years. In that role, he helped launch and develop NBA TV and had responsibility for both marketing and business development efforts of NBA TV and NBA LEAGUE PASS.

From a personal standpoint, Paulson is looking forward to getting to the Northwest and starting his life here. He and his wife are passionate outdoor enthusiasts who have made many visits to Portland to enjoy the outdoors and scenery. Paulson is also very environmentally active, serving as a trustee on the board of the Wildlife Conservation and traveling extensively in Central and South America on trips focusing on wildlife and natural history.

"Living in the city that is the heart of the green movement is a very invigorating opportunity. Both Heather and I feel Portland has a focus on family that is truly unique and will be a great community to raise our own family in the future," Paulson said.

"I have long had a goal of owning and operating a sports franchise," Paulson said. "Of course, the deal had to meet certain investment criteria, but more importantly, the community also had to be the place Heather and I would be enthusiastic about living in and raising children. Portland quickly became the focus as it passed with such flying colors on both fronts."

Merritt is not only an outstanding sports executive, he is someone who understands the relationship between sports and community," said David J. Stern, Commissioner of the NBA. "I believe he will be a tremendous team owner and a great addition to the city of Portland."

"I want to personally welcome Merritt and Heather to Portland," said Portland Mayor Tom Potter before he left on an economic development trade mission to Bolonga, Italy. " i was thrilled to learn of Merritt’s plans to purchase the teams, his enthusiasm to move here and settle into our community. We will benefit from an active local owner who already has the interest of the city at heart."

While Paulson will own a majority of the team, his father, Henry M. Paulson, will also have a percentage of ownership in the teams, due to his small minority interest in Shortstop, LLC. Henry Paulson’s interests do not involve any managerial or operational responsibilities in connection with Shortstop, LLC and Merritt is the majority owner. Henry Paulson is currently serving as the Secretary of the Treasury for the United States.

In addition to Paulson, Corey Busch adds to Paulson’s taem as his advisor. Busch was Executive Vice President of the San Francisco Giants for 14 years and has worked closely with Paulson throughout the negotiation and purchase process. "I am fortunate that Corey will continue to be involved going forward as his counsel has proven to be a invaluable asset," Paulson said.

The deal will be completed upon final approval from Major League Baseball, which is expected soon.

STATEMENT FROM TIM HOLT, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT/CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER - UNITED SOCCER LEAGUES

"Today is an exciting day for United Soccer Leagues and we are pleased to welcome Shortstop, LLC into the USL family. It is clear to us that, under the new leadership of Merritt Paulson and the rest of his ownership group, the Portland Timbers will continue to be one of the most successful and best supported franchises in not only the USL First Division (USL-1), but in all of American professional soccer.

"Following closely behind PBIG and the Pacific Coast League during a period in which each played critical roles in the assurance of the current and future viability of the franchises and PGE Park, we firmly believe Shortstop LLC is well-prepared to bring a long-term ownership perspective for the franchise."

"Since their return to professional soccer in 2001, the Timbers have been a USL leader in player development, fan support, and game day operations/promotions. We expect that the future will bring more of the same whilst the Timbers continue to challenge for their first USL-1 Championship in what is an increasingly respected and important North American soccer competition."

ABOUT PRESTON NORTH END
Founded in 1880, Preston North End was one of the founding members of the English Football League in 1888. The club was successful early in its history, winning the top division title in 1888-89 and 1889-90, and recorded the first "Double" in English soccer history going undefeated in both league and FA Cup matches. Only Arsenal has recorded an undefeated regular season since, accomplishing the feat in 2003-04. In 1938, Preston North End captured its second FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

In the early 1960s, Preston North End was relegated to the second division, now called the Coca-Cola Championship. In 1964, Preston North End made its seventh FA Cup finals appearance, but lost to West Ham United. Preston North End slid to the third division (now League One) in 1973 and would ultimately drop as low as the fourth division (now League Two) in 1985. Since 1990, Preston North End has made a steady climb back to the Championship, earning a promotion in 1995-96 and then returning to the second division after the 1999-2000 season.

In recent years, Preston North End has become a promotion contender fighting for a chance to play in England's top tier, the English Premier League. The Lilywhites reached the Championship playoff final in 2004-05, but lost to West Ham United. The following season, Preston North End lost to Leeds United in the semifinals, ending another run at a promotion. In 2006-07, Preston North End finished one point from a promotion playoff spot.

Preston North End plays its home matches at Deepdale Stadium. Built in 1875, Deepdale is one of the oldest stadiums in England and seats approximately 20,500 people.

Rochester Raging Rhinos 0 - Portland Timbers 2

The Timbers now have 2 wins and 1 tie with no losses at home. They won the match after Andrew Gregor & Leonard Griffin found the back of the net. Leonard Griffin's goal was an absolute cracker of a goal from around 30 yards out. Gregor's goal was his 4th on the season. The night saw over 50 fouls commited and 7 cards being showed. But the most severe hit of the night came on a Gregor free kick. The free kick hit Chris Aloisi directly in the face. He immediately went down and was down for several minutes. When he did try to get on his feet he ended up collapsing right back down. He did end up walking off of the field but later had to be taking to the hospital for tests.
The shutout for Josh Wicks was his first on the season.
Rochester had a great opportunity for a goal early on but forward Hamed Diallo tried to side volley the ball when he could of easily headed the ball in. The Raging Rhinos has 17 cards in total in 6 matches so far this season. Midfielder Tenywa Bonseu has already seen 4 yellow cards and 1 red card.

Bryan Jordan scored his second goal of the season, but it was his first in a league match. He scored another goal earlier on but a bogus call saw the goal wiped off of the board. The referee had said that Jordan had handled the ball. All replays of the play have shown otherwise. Andrew Gregor notched his third goal of the season on a penalty kick later on. Their goals helped the Timbers earn a point in the I-5 rivalry match. The bad call by the referee was not the only bad call or non call of the match. There was several elbows thrown, a kick to the face of a player, or a player being taking down inside of the box.
The match saw the return of Hugo Alcarez-Cuellar, a long-time Timbers player.

Timbers Lineup :
Josh Wicks, Lee Morrison, Scot Thompson, Lee Knowles, Leonard Griffin, Neil Dombrowski (Tom Poltl 32'), Andrew Gregor, Luke Kreamalmeyer (Jaime Ambriz 83'), Troy Ready (Shaun Higgins 54'), Bryan Jordan, Chris Bagley.
