They currently play in the Coca-Cola Football League Championship Division. Which is the second-highest division in the English football league system. The highest division is called the Barclays English Premier League. Preston North end finished 7th in the division this past season. The top three teams from the Coca-Cola Football League Championship is promoted to the Barclays English Premier League. The bottom three teams from the Coca-Cola Football League Championships relegated to the Coca-Cola Football League One.Their fans are called the "The Lillywhites" or "The Whites". But also go by the name "The Invincibles", "Northenders", or "The Guild". Paul Simpson is the current manager of the team. He took over as manager on June 16, 2006 for the departing Billy Davies. Paul was manager at Carlisle United football club. He won the Football League Two Championship in the 2005/2006 season with Carlisle United. He also played for Manchester City, Oxford United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Derby County, Sheffield United, Walsall, Blackpool, Rochdale, Carlisle United, & the England U-21 team.
They were a founder member of the English Football League in 1888. They were the first English football champions in 1888-1889 season after going undefeated the whole season. In the same season they also went undefeated and won the FA Cup. They were the league champions again in the 1889-1890 season. They won the FA Cup again in the 1937-1938 season. They have also been the runners-up for the FA Cup in the 1887-1888, 1921-1922, 1936-1937, 1953-1954, & 1963-1964 season.
Preston were relegated to the Coca-Cola Football League Championship Division in 1961 and have not played in the Barclays English Premier League since. They had a chance in 2005 when they played in a playoff versus West Ham but lost 1-0.
