TIMBERS INVADE SEATTLE IN SECOND-ROUND U.S. OPEN CUP PLAY

In-season tournament match kicks off busy week for Timbers

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers travel north to play the Seattle Sounders in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash., at 7 p.m. The winner of the second-round match will host Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA on July 10 in the third round.

The Timbers are 0-1-1 against the Sounders in league matches in 2007. In their last meeting on May 11, the Timbers scored two goals late to rally back for a 2-2 draw at PGE Park.

The last time the two sides met in U.S. Open Cup play was in 2005 as the Timbers defeated Seattle 2-0 at PGE Park. The Timbers are 3-3-0 in U.S. Open Cup matches since 2001 and have advanced as high as the fourth round in 2004 and 2005.

Portland (4-2-3, 15pts) defeated the Bakersfield Brigade (PDL) 2-0 in first-round play June 12 in Bakersfield, Calif.

Seattle (5-5-4, 19pts) advanced to the second round after defeating the Banat Arsenal (USASA) 4-1 at Starfire Sports Complex on June 12. The Sounders suffered a 1-0 loss to the Montreal Impact over the weekend, ending a five game unbeaten streak dating back to May 20. In the loss, Seattle played without the services of defender Danny Jackson and forward Nathan Knox.

The U.S. Open Cup match in Seattle kicks off a three-game week for the Timbers. On Thursday, the Timbers travel to California to face the Victory and then play host to Miami FC on Saturday at PGE Park at 7 p.m.
